LOCKEDIN / FORWARD-DEPLOYED ENGINEERING 101
Understand it.
Then build it.
You can be an experienced engineer and still be new to agents. Start with what each thing is and how it helps a person do useful work. Explore 48 original introductions across software, agents, cloud, security and delivery. Start here without a model key; each topic connects to deeper instruction and practice.

A role and a way of working
What is a forward-deployed engineer?
A forward-deployed engineer works directly with a client's team to understand a problem, build useful software and help that team use and maintain it. They combine engineering with discovery, communication and operational ownership. It is a role, not a programming language or a particular AI tool.
Knowing a framework is only part of the job. You also need to discover what matters, explain a tradeoff, test what you built and leave another engineer able to run it.
CONNECT IT TO WHAT YOU KNOW
Start with something familiar.
Think of the engineer who can sit with a customer, understand how the work actually happens, build a useful change and make sure the receiving team can operate it. The job connects delivery judgment with technical implementation.
Forward-deployed engineering is a role and a way of delivering, not a particular model, framework or certification. Tool knowledge supports that work; it does not replace it.
Words worth knowing
- Discovery
- Learning how the work happens before deciding what to build.
- Delivery slice
- A small, useful piece of the solution you can build and test.
- Handover
- Transferring the knowledge and access needed to operate the software.
ONE EXAMPLE / FICTIONAL CASE
Watch the work take shape.
Imagine a service team spending each morning reading requests and looking up procedures. Your job is to understand that work, build a useful first improvement and make sure the team can trust and own it.
- 01Understand the work
- 02Build a small improvement
- 03Prove and transfer it
Understand the work
Sit with the people processing requests. Ask what slows them down and observe an ordinary request.
A problem described in the team's own wordsFROM RECOGNITION TO REASONING
Explain the role using a workflow you already know.
- 01
Name the person doing the work and the difficulty they experience.
- 02
Describe one small software improvement and how you would test its value.
- 03
Name what the receiving team would need to operate it without you.
A short discovery-to-handover explanation.
Compare your reasoning when you are ready
The work begins with the customer's task and ends with usable capability in the receiving team. A successful model call is only one possible component.
Keep notes in your own working copy. Moving through these cards does not record completion.
TURN THE IDEA INTO USEFUL WORK
You can now go deeper.
Explain the client problem, the first useful improvement and who will own it. You do not need to name a framework yet.
