LOCKEDIN / FORWARD-DEPLOYED ENGINEERING 101
Understand it.
Then build it.
You can be an experienced engineer and still be new to agents. Start with what each thing is and how it helps a person do useful work. Explore 48 original introductions across software, agents, cloud, security and delivery. Start here without a model key; each topic connects to deeper instruction and practice.

Operational ownership and adoption
What does a production handover include?
A handover transfers the ability to operate, change and recover a service to its receiving team. It includes the system's scope, evidence, permissions, runbook, known limits and decision owners. Sending a repository link alone does not establish that the team can run the service.
Forward-deployed work must survive after the embedded engineer leaves the engagement.
CONNECT IT TO WHAT YOU KNOW
Start with something familiar.
It resembles an incident-response exercise: the receiving engineer must perform the important actions, not just watch the original builder narrate them.
Completion means the receiver can explain and perform the agreed operating tasks. It does not mean every future failure has been eliminated.
Words worth knowing
- Runbook
- Instructions for a defined operational situation.
- Rollback
- Returning to an earlier known deployment or behavior.
- Escalation
- Passing a decision or incident to the responsible person or team.
ONE EXAMPLE / FICTIONAL CASE
Watch the work take shape.
A new operator receives an alert that the procedure source is stale and must stop drafting until the source is reviewed.
- 01Prepare the packet
- 02Rehearse failure
- 03Accept ownership
Prepare the packet
Record architecture, versions, access ownership, checks, limits and escalation contacts by accountable role.
A usable operating referenceFROM RECOGNITION TO REASONING
Write and rehearse a source-unavailable runbook.
- 01
Describe the symptom, safe stop and recovery check.
- 02
Let another person follow it without your narration.
- 03
Record what was unclear and revise the instructions.
A runbook with observations from the receiving rehearsal.
Compare your reasoning when you are ready
If the receiver needs undocumented knowledge, the handover is incomplete. The rehearsal reveals that gap before a live incident does.
Keep notes in your own working copy. Moving through these cards does not record completion.
TURN THE IDEA INTO USEFUL WORK
You can now go deeper.
Completion means the receiver can explain and perform the agreed operating tasks. It does not mean every future failure has been eliminated.
