LOCKEDIN / FORWARD-DEPLOYED ENGINEERING 101
Understand it.
Then build it.
You can be an experienced engineer and still be new to agents. Start with what each thing is and how it helps a person do useful work. Explore 48 original introductions across software, agents, cloud, security and delivery. Start here without a model key; each topic connects to deeper instruction and practice.

A modular development and improvement software suite
What is NeMo, and when would I use it?
NeMo is NVIDIA's software suite for developing and improving models and agent systems. Its parts address different jobs: data preparation, customization, evaluation and guardrails. NeMo Framework focuses on model training and development; NeMo Agent Toolkit helps evaluate and optimize agent systems.
An FDE should diagnose whether poor results come from missing knowledge, unclear instructions, model behavior or application defects before proposing customization.
CONNECT IT TO WHAT YOU KNOW
Start with something familiar.
Think of a software engineering toolchain: build tools, test tools and profilers work together, but you select the tool needed for the problem. You do not insert the entire toolchain into every user request.
NeMo is not the Nemotron model family. Fine-tuning changes model behavior through training; retrieval supplies current information at request time. A guardrail is one control, not proof of security or compliance.
Words worth knowing
- Fine-tuning
- Additional training that changes a model's parameters for a particular objective.
- Holdout
- Evaluation examples kept out of the improvement/training data.
- Guardrail
- An explicit check or constraint around inputs, outputs or actions.
ONE EXAMPLE / FICTIONAL CASE
Watch the work take shape.
The assistant uses outdated maintenance rules. Fix the authorized retrieval source first. If a separate formatting behavior still fails on a clean evaluation set, consider a controlled customization experiment.

Diagnose
Keep examples of the failure and identify whether the issue is data, behavior or system integration.
A testable improvement hypothesisFROM RECOGNITION TO REASONING
Choose an improvement method for three failures.
- 01
Compare outdated source knowledge, inconsistent output shape and an unauthorized tool call.
- 02
Propose retrieval repair, validated output handling or server authorization where appropriate.
- 03
State what evidence would justify a later customization experiment.
Three failure-to-intervention mappings with held-out checks.
Compare your reasoning when you are ready
Training is not a substitute for current source data or application authorization. A useful improvement experiment isolates the cause and can be rejected if the evidence does not support it.
Keep notes in your own working copy. Moving through these cards does not record completion.
TURN THE IDEA INTO USEFUL WORK
You can now go deeper.
Choose the NeMo component after diagnosing the problem, and keep a baseline to measure whether it helped.
